Air
pollution worsens
Hong Kong’s
worsening air pollution has created four times more sospended particles in the
air than Los Angeles, resulting in about 45% of daytime in a year having low
visibility. The problem is costing Hong Kong HK$ 20 billion and 1,600 lives a
year. This is the
finding of a study jointly conducted by the University of Hong Kong, The Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong
and Civic Exchange. An Environmental Protection Department spokesman reiterated
that the degradation of visibility was regional problem. To improve air
quality, the HongKong and Guangdong governments have agreed to reduce emissions
of various pollutants especially, those from power plants, through local
measures across-the-border cooperation by the year 2010.Tratto da 中国日报
Ancient
stone found
An ancient
stone was recentrly discovered in Taishan Mountain, further revealing the
mistery of the most famous mountain in the country. A group of zircons found at
the main peak of the mountain were estimated to be more than 3 billion years
old, with the oldest one dating back to at least 3.4 billion years ago. The new
finding has challenged the current theory that the main peaks of the Taishan
Mountain were formed about 2.5 billion years ago, offering important
information on the research of the mountain’s history, said Lu Songnian, a
